Dates and schedule:

We will be having various sessions on June: Friday 13th and Monday 16th, including some breaks and the lunch period.

The sessions will be held in the Theoretical Physics Department Seminar Room (2nd floor, west wing)

There will be no session during the weekend.

This brief course aims to familiarize students (oriented to Master and PhD) with some useful software for the automatization of Feynman diagram calculations. Applications from last year undergrad students may also be considered.

In particular, the lectures will be focused on a series of HEP packages for Mathematica, with an intended practical hands-on approach.

In the introductory sessions, we will discuss the installation and basic use of,

  • FeynRules: implementation of a QFT Lagrangian and Feynman vertex derivation
  • FeynArts: calculation of topologies and diagrams
  • FeynCalc: formal evaluation of the Feynman diagrams

In a final session, on Monday 16th afternoon, we will be having a small introduction to MonteCarlo generators for numerical simulations of decay widths and cross sections:

  • MadGraph5_aMC@NLO: this open-source software uses the particle models discussed in the previous sessions to simulate particle interactions at the level of Feynman diagrams. It allows users to generate, visualize, and analyze complex scattering processes that occur in particle accelerators like LHC.

Requirements: it is highly recommended to have some previous knowledge on quantum field theory and particle physics. Likewise, the attendants should be familiar with Mathematica. For the Madgraph5 session you will be needing a Linux PC. The MonteCarlo can also be run on the Unix system of Mac computers, or in the Linux sub-system in Windows 10 or 11 (previous Windows versions require more involved solutions).
